If you write article after article using the bum marketing method the best you know how, you’re leaving money on the table. Any sales yet? Good! Do you make your monthly rent from your income? Congratulations! The thing is, you might also make your car payment if only there weren’t something fundamentally wrong about your resource box link.

Who Gets to Build Their List?

The vendor, that’s who. Not you. Is that fair? Who attracted your readers? For your ezinearticles.com links, you bought domain names and use URL forwarding to instantly send your readers to each vendor’s sales page.

Do you catch each reader’s name and email? No. Can you market to each reader again? Not unless they read another article by you.

The readers you work so hard for, in hopes of clicks, just slip through your fingers like water. No, not water, more like gold dust.

It’s universally accepted in marketing that a reader needs contact with you seven times before he or she buys. Vendors know this. Why do you think they work so hard for email addresses?

How You Can Plug This Leak, Build A List and Form Relationships

Instead of sending your readers straight to a sales page, do not pass Go, do not collect $100 (for you Monopoly game fans), you must send them to your own opt-in page. You need an enticement they can’t resist trading their name and email address for.

What Can You Use as Enticement?

1. Often a free report or free video appeals. You can write a report yourself–just put together some articles on an extra troublesome aspect of your niche.

2. You can find rebrandable reports you can give away.

3. You can make a video of one of your articles.

4. Do a Google search, see what your competitors offer as link bait, then equal or better them.

But You Also Need An Autoresponder

Building a list means you need an opt-in form and a series of messages for your readers. Use each message as an opportunity to bond, help them know, like and trust you, see you as an expert, and feel comfortable with your recommendations.

If you’re broke, you may think you can send messages to a couple dozen readers on your own. Fine. But when you send 100, 200 or more someday, your ISP won’t like such volume emails. They’ll shut you down. And they or someone else will accuse you of spam at some point. Guaranteed.

In learning how to make money writing, you need to know there are two kinds of money: linear and residual. Linear income is money you get one time only for the work you do. Most people earn this kind of income. It’s called a job, also known as Just Over Broke. Residual income is money you get many times for work you do. Keywords, baby.

Spend a little time digging up the keyword phrases that people search for, especially long tail keywords that have moderate searches and not too much competition. Armed with a list of these keywords, you can unleash your creativity on articles people can’t wait to read. Give them enough information to begin to know, like and trust you so they’ll click the link in your resource box. Whether you send them to your own product or a product you’re an affiliate for, you can get paid numerous times. Once started, you can’t shut it off!

Are all articles residual income producers?

Not on your life. Ask me how I know and you’ll see a frown on my face. Before I knew better, I wrote articles without a whole lot of thought about keywords, then targeted keywords that were too big and general. How could anyone find my lonesome George article on “home business” when there are at least a hundred million of them available on the web?

How to find keywords that count.

Search for keywords with Google’s keyword tool or Wordtracker and look for keyword phrases with a search volume of 300 to 500 searches per month. Start with one, then search for more. Thirty keywords will give you a great article marketing campaign.

When you find one, measure its competitiveness by doing a Google search with “allintitle:keyword” to reveal how many pages are optimized for that keyword. Anything between 500 to 1000 resulting pages is excellent. Find one? You’ve just struck gold.

Find long tail keywords.

Hey, online home business owner. How’s business? Do you get lots of traffic? Are you making money hand over fist? If not, what would you give for these four benefits?

3) build rank for your site in Google, MSN and Yahoo

First, open Google Keyword Tool External or Wordtracker and type in your niche.

Let’s say it’s golf. Golf is HUGE. No way can you rank with the word golf alone as a keyword. Scan down the list of results for a more specific phrase for what you sell. Let’s try golf lessons.

You want a three or four word phrase with 300 to 500 searches per month. I see a lot of possibilities, like golfing lessons, pga golf lesson, private golf lesson, golf lesson chipping, golf lesson dvd, and more. Grab all the keyword phrases with between 300 and 500 searches.

Second, check each one for competition with a Google search using allintitle: with your keyword phrase.

Like this–allintitle:private golf lesson. Look for numbers between 500 and 1000 because this is where it’s easy to rank for your keyword. Any lower numbers are better yet.

My search today for allintitle:golfing lessons shows 7,340 pages with that keyword phrase. It seems like too many competing pages, but let’s see if that number is true using a trick I learned from Travis Sago, chief bum marketer.

Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the last page in the list from 1-10 or 1-20. In this case there were 7 pages. When I clicked on 7, I landed on a page that said 301-398 of 7,340 pages. You can’t get past this page, which means only 398 pages show in Google for the phrase golfing lessons.

It’s less than the 500-1000 target, so this is a great long tail keyword phrase even though it’s only two words. I see other people have articles for this phrase.

Let’s try allintitle:golf lesson chipping and see what happens. Ah-ha! Today’s search finds 331 competing pages, and when we verify that, we find 341. I see many videos and no articles. Chipping must be hard to convey in written words?

Check the other keyword phrases from your list. Get at least 30 good long tail keywords and see what it takes to rank for each one besides good numbers. Do your competitors create articles, videos, or what?

Armed with great long tail keywords and this knowledge about what the competitors offer, you can now write articles and/or make videos to boost your online home business and laugh all the way to the bank. You’re welcome.

The thing is, with article marketing, you’re safe. Providing people with exactly what they need will never put you in the wrong, no matter what new algorithms the search engines put into play.

If you use the keyword phrases your customers use when they search for solutions to their problems, and wrap them in useful content that helps solve their problems, you’re golden.

At the end of your articles, entice your reader to seek more from you. Promise her more information so she’ll click your link to read more, grab a free report, or see a video that explains a helpful tip more fully.

Don’t ASSUME your reader will click.
