In learning how to make money writing, you need to know there are two kinds of money: linear and residual. Linear income is money you get one time only for the work you do. Most people earn this kind of income. It’s called a job, also known as Just Over Broke. Residual income is money you get many times for work you do. If you write a book on a topic people love, you can sell that book year after year, getting paid endless times for work you did once. How does this work with article marketing?

Keywords, baby.

Spend a little time digging up the keyword phrases that people search for, especially long tail keywords that have moderate searches and not too much competition. Armed with a list of these keywords, you can unleash your creativity on articles people can’t wait to read. Give them enough information to begin to know, like and trust you so they’ll click the link in your resource box. Whether you send them to your own product or a product you’re an affiliate for, you can get paid numerous times. Once started, you can’t shut it off!

Are all articles residual income producers?

Not on your life. Ask me how I know and you’ll see a frown on my face. Before I knew better, I wrote articles without a whole lot of thought about keywords, then targeted keywords that were too big and general. How could anyone find my lonesome George article on “home business” when there are at least a hundred million of them available on the web?

How to find keywords that count.

Search for keywords with Google’s keyword tool or Wordtracker and look for keyword phrases with a search volume of 300 to 500 searches per month. Start with one, then search for more. Thirty keywords will give you a great article marketing campaign.

When you find one, measure its competitiveness by doing a Google search with “allintitle:keyword” to reveal how many pages are optimized for that keyword. Anything between 500 to 1000 resulting pages is excellent. Find one? You’ve just struck gold.

Hot Niche + Winning Product = Cash!

Confused about what to sell as an affiliate? Worried your affiliate marketing strategies will fail? It’s best to sell what people are already buying. Here’s how to find a hot niche and winning product.

Two Steps to Selecting a Hot Niche

Go to ClickBank and choose one of the nine categories. Whichever one strikes your fancy is good as you’ll find gold in all of them. Leave the keyword field empty and browse through the products using Sort by: Popularity. This will reveal which niches and products sell well.

1) Test interest level.

Look at the last item in the line under each product listed–grav. A big number after grav shows the niche has ready buyers.

Test this with the Google keyword tool where you search for a general term for the niche. If you chose the computing and internet category in ClickBank and see registry cleaners have good grav numbers, search for registry cleaners in the keyword tool. A monthly search volume of 5000 is good, more is great.

2) Test competition level.

First, look for at least three competing products in ClickBank.

Second, with your browser do a Google search for “registry cleaner” and see how many Google Ads appear on the right. Five or six ads is a good sign that affiliates make money from their ads.

Three Steps to Selecting a Winning Product

1) Look for healthy ClickBank statistics.

See the line of symbols/numbers in the ClickBank search results you got before? Here’s what those notations mean to you.

• $/sale — average amount earned per affiliate per sale, a number that can be driven down by refunds and chargebacks. If the number is less than the next number (we’ll get to that in a minute), it’s a signal that customers demand refunds. Not so good.
• Total $/sale — Go for a minimum of $20 to profit from your affiliate marketing efforts.
• %/sale — average percentage commission earned per affiliate per sale. You want at least 50%.
• %refrd — fraction of product owner’s total sales that are referred by affiliates. You want to see 70-90% as that suggests lots of affiliates make a generous commission on this product.
• grav: # — an estimate of the number of affiliates with at least one sale in the last 30 days. Look for a product with 50-100 which indicates affiliates do sell it, but not too many, so there’s room for you at the table.

2) Look for a professional sales page.

This is crucial to your success. Visit the sales page, read it and see if it motivates YOU to buy. Some great products have lousy sales pages that turn off customers. Pass up a bad sales page.

3) Check for ready affiliate marketing tools.

Go to the product website and check out the affiliates section. You don’t want to rely entirely on your own devices and have to invent enticements. A smart product owner supplies you with a wide array of tools like PPC keywords, ad copy, email ad copy, banners and support.

Your finger in every sweet money pie.

When you start a new money making home business, here’s an important concept to keep in mind. Will you earn “sweet money” or “sour money?”

I first heard of this idea from an older German woman when she learned I did clothing alterations and tailoring for a living. She puckered up her face and said, “Sour money.”

I expect I said, “Huh?” What nerve! I didn’t expect disapproval from a lady lounging on a park bench on a sunny afternoon. I regretted stopping when she asked me what I did as I walked by with an armload of clothes.

She asked if I only got paid once for the work. I nodded, confused. I worked and got paid. What did she mean?

She said it’s better to do work once and get paid for it many times.

I walked away convinced she was a local loony I’d steer clear of in the future.
